【英語多益通】你今天YouBike了嗎？

自2008年創立的YouBike，歷經了5年的蟄伏期，到了2013年纔有了一個「大爆發」，成爲現在臺北市大街小巷都看得見的黃色微笑自行車。當初工作人員曾因爲YouBike的乏人問津與被民衆批評爲不實用的公共設施，一度考慮停辦，但是他們認爲城市自行車的作法在歐美非常成功，因此實在不願放棄這麼好的構想。
如今，臺北YouBike逆轉勝。世界知名的國際旅遊雜誌Global Traveler也以「Taipei On Two Wheels」（騎自行車的臺北）稱讚 YouBike的便利，它這麼寫道：
The YouBike rental station network enables commuters and tourists alike to hire a bike from one station and return it to any other. Rental payment can be made via the city's stored value EasyCard, major credit cards and mobile phones.
譯：YouBike的租車網絡使通勤族與觀光客都可用甲地租車、乙地還車的方式租車。租車費用可以用本市可儲值的悠遊卡、主要的信用卡、或手機做支付。
YouBike使用說明第一步：成爲會員
YouBike的迷人之處是你可以直接用臺北公車、捷運皆通用的悠遊卡（Easycard）來租車與還車。只要在YouBike的自動服務機（Kiosk）系統上，你就可以騎着「小小黃」的微笑YouBike進行城市漫遊。成爲會員（join）的方法是：
Join: For an Easycard holder, you can register as a YouBike member on a Kiosk, on the YouBike website, or at the Service Center. Single Rental for those who do not have an Easycard, you can use a cell phone or a chip credit card to rent a bike on a Kiosk at any station.
譯：如果你要成爲會員，你必須先持悠遊卡到Kiosk自動服務機，或是上YouBike網站、或是到服務中心加入YouBike。至於沒有悠遊卡而想要單次租車的人，可以使用手機或是晶片信用卡到各場站的Kiosk自動服務機租車。
如果你還記得洋芋片是potato chips的話，可以知道chip是指「薄片」，應該不難理解chip credit card是「晶片信用卡」。
YouBike使用說明第二步：取車
每次要租YouBike自行車，要選車、取車（take），需要先做一個動作：
Take: Please first place your Easycard on the top of the dock, wait for the“Take”green light to flash and then pull the bike from behind to ride.
譯：你必須在停車柱上方的面板上，先感應已註冊的悠遊卡，等待取車綠燈閃爍之後，再將YouBike自行車向後拉出使用。
英語字彙「place」在此可不是「地方」，而是當動詞使用的「放、放置」。我們最常看到「dock」的用法是「碼頭、港區」，在此是停泊自行車的碼頭，所以YouBike的工作人員把它稱爲停靠自行車的「停車柱」。
YouBike使用說明第三步：還車
當你帶着愉快的心情，騎着小小黃自行車穿梭在都市街頭巷尾，結束前你必須要完成還車（return）的動作：
Return: Insert the bike lock plate into an unoccupied dock lock slot. Wait for the“Place Your Card”blue light to flash and then place the Easycard you used to rent this bike and confirm the fee deducted for this transaction and the remaining sum.Now the transaction is complete.
譯：將車身卡榫插入空的停車柱。在刷卡藍燈閃爍之後，感應本次借車時所使用的悠遊卡，確認本次扣款與剩餘金額，即完成交易。
以上這三段教你如何租、借、還YouBike的英語用字，是國際職場裡常見的「使用說明」（instructions）；它是一種溝通工具，讓使用者能正確使用，因此也常被多益測驗的出題單位拿來做爲測驗題的材料。例如，《多益測驗官方全真試題指南》就曾經出現過一題濾水器的使用說明，做爲閱讀測驗Part 7的題目。
如果你看懂了以上YouBike的使用說明，那以下這3題多益測驗的仿真題應該難不倒你：
1. What do the instructions explain?(A) How to use Kiosk and Easycard to rent a bicycle(B) How to choose a good bicycle(C) How to activate a credit card(D) How to repair a flash light
解析第1題的題意是「上述的說明在解釋什麼？」，正確答案是(A)。從以上加入會員、借車、還車的說明，可以明顯看出是在指示如何租借YouBike。答案(B)如何挑選一輛好自行車、答案(C)如何替信用卡開卡、答案(D)如何修理手電筒，皆非正解。
本題有一個速解法，當看到instructions這個字時，因爲它在職埸裡有「使用說明（書）」之意，而答案(A)的「How to use....（如何使用⋯）」字眼可以迅速立判此爲正確答案。順道一提，instruction與construction（建築）、obstruction（妨礙）、destruction（破壞）有相同的英語字根「struct」，它有build之意，不妨同時一學。
2. To register as a member, which place is NOT mentioned?(A) On a Kiosk(B) On the YouBike website(C) On a dock(D) At the Service Center
解析第2題的題意是「要註冊成爲會員，以下哪一個地點未提到？」，正確答案是(C)。本題是多益測驗Part 7裡的「挑錯的」題型。從以上使用說明中的「you can register as a YouBike member on a Kiosk, on the YouBike website, or at the Service Center」得知有3處可以註冊，而無法在停車柱（dock）上進行。
3. What is the purpose of the chip credit card?(A) To complete the transaction(B) To wait for the blue light to flash(C) To confirm the fee(D) To use it for single rental
解析第3題的題意是「晶片信用卡的用途是什麼？」，正確答案是(D)，用於沒有悠遊卡而需要單次租用自行車的時候。答案(A)完成交易、答案(B)等待藍燈閃爍、答案(C)確認租車費用，皆非正解。
YouBike的英語版使用說明只是instructions的一例，你的智慧型手機、印表機、錄放影機、桌上型電腦等等，都有英語版的使用說明，要想在多益測驗拿高分的人，不妨將這些沒有人會注意的說明書拿來一讀，你會發現它們饒富趣味，而且你的英語閱讀能力會大大增加。
下一次如果你的外國友人也想在臺北市騎YouBike，你要趕快帶他們去YouBike的自動服務機，告訴他們英文使用說明。而正在準備多益測驗的人，也不妨閱讀一下英語版本的使用說明全文，看看你是否瞭解。
除了YouBike使用說明（instructions），以下各國城市自行車計劃的流行詞彙，也值得一學：
Bicycle Sharing System「自行車共用系統」。share有「分享、分攤、共用」的意思。當你的外國同事Mary跟你說：「I will be sharing this office, won't I?」，她是指「我將要和你共用這間辦公室，是嗎？」
Progressive Pricing Rates「累進費率」。「累進」是progressive，它與表示「進展、進步」的progress乃是系出同源。例：The board of directors requested the committee to supervise the progress in the technical area.（董事會要求委員會監督技術方面的工作進展。）
Commuter-friendly「方便通勤族的」。3C產品製造商常稱某種設計是「user-friendly」， 即有利於使用者。YouBike給通勤族（commuter）提供便利性，故稱commuter-friendly。commute（通勤）亦值得一記。例：About half of the employees at World Trade Center commute to work by bus.（世貿中心約有半數員工搭公車通勤。）
